iPod Classic 5G (5.5G) [iPod Video]

Replace the Battery in a Fifth-Generation iPod Video:

To replace the battery in a fifth-generation iPod Video:

1. Open the iPod according to the instructions provided by iDoctor staff:

 

2. Disconnect the battery by lifting up the brown clip to release the ribbon cable (see Step 1).

 

3. Lift hard drive out of the iPod (see Step 2).

 

4. Locate the audio jack (attached to a ribbon cable). Gently lift the brown clip to release the cable, and then disconnect it (see Step 3).

 

5. Locate the battery fixed to the back panel of the iPod, remove it (see Step 4). A mild adhesive holds it in place.

 

6. Insert the new battery into the iPod (see Step 5).

 

8. Connect the audio jack back in to the logic board (see Step 6).

 

9. Connect the new battery by sliding the loose end of the ribbon cable down into the brown clip (see Step 7). Remember to push the clip back down.

 

10. Put the iPod back together.

Replace the LCD Display in a Fifth-Generation iPod Video:

To replace the LCD Display in a fifth-generation iPod Video:

1. Open the iPod according to the instructions provided by iDoctor staff:

 

2. At the bottom of the unit, find and disconnect the ribbon cable from the battery

(see Step 1). There is a brown clip that holds the cable in place, lift it. Be gentle with this clip, as it is easily removed.

 

3. Locate the audio jack (attached to the logic board by ribbon cable). Gently lift the brown clip to release the cable, and then disconnect it (see Step 2).

 

4. Carefully lift the hard drive out of the iPod and disconnect it by lifting the black clip with the tip of a screwdriver. Retrieve the hard drive (see Step 3).

 

5. Once the hard drive is removed, unclip the LCD Display cable from the logic board (see Step 4). Retrieve the LCD Display.

 

6. Notice the six Phillips-head screws – three on each side – that hold the front panel of the iPod to the frame. Remove all six screws (see Step 5).

 

7. Separate the front panel from the frame of the iPod (see Step 6).

 

8. Lift the LCD Display out of the logic board (see Step 7).

 

9. Insert the new LCD Display into the iPod.

 

10. Put the front panel of the iPod back onto the frame.

 

11. Replace the six Phillips-head screws.

 

12. Push the LCD Display connection switch down to fasten the ribbon cable.

 

13. Reconnect the hard drive back to the hard drive connector (see Step 3).

 

14. Reconnect the audio jack cable. Make sure the brown clip is clipped back down, and the cable is held securely.

 

15. Place the hard drive back into the iPod. Make sure it is the right way up.

 

16. Reconnect the battery ribbon cable. Again, make sure the brown clip is clipped back down, and the cable is held securely.

 

17. Put the iPod back together.

How to Open Your Fifth-Generation iPod Video: 

To open your fifth-generation iPod Video:

1. Turn the iPod on its side and locate the gap between both front and back panels.

 

2. Take a plastic tool/flat-headed screwdriver and carefully but firmly wedge it into the side of the iPod at the position you located in (1).

 

3. Carefully slide the plastic tool or the flat-headed screwdriver down the side of the iPod Video to release all the clips that hold it together.

 

4. Gently lift the back. Don’t take it all the way off just yet. Notice that there are two ribbon cables connecting the back to the logic board of the iPod (see Step 1).

 

5. Unplug the cables from the logic board one at a time (see Step 2). The connectors are each held with a slide clip. Release the clips, and retrieve the cables. Take care, the cables tear easily.

 

6. With the cables unattached to the logic board, retrieve the back panel (see Step 3).

 

7. With the cables unattached to the logic board, retrieve the back panel (see Step 3).

Replace the Audio Jack in a Fifth-Generation iPod Video:

To replace the audio jack in a fifth-generation iPod Video:

1. Open the iPod according to the instructions provided by iDoctor staff:

 

2. A ribbon cable connects the battery to the logic board. Unplug it (see Step 1). Gently lift the brown clip. The cable should easily come loose.

 

3. Lift hard drive out of the iPod (see Step 2).

 

4. Locate the audio jack (attached to the logic board by ribbon cable). Gently lift the brown clip to release the cable, and then disconnect it (see Step 3).

 

5. Locate the battery fixed to the back panel of the iPod, remove it (see Step 4). A mild adhesive holds it in place.

 

6. There are four screws holding the audio jack in place. Remove all four screws with your Phillips-head screwdriver.

 

7. Find and remove the little piece of black tape that holds down the corner of the ribbon cable (see Step 5).

 

8. Insert the new audio jack into the iPod (see Step 6).

 

9. Replace all four screws.

 

10. Reapply the black tape removed in (7).

 

11. Place the battery back into the iPod.

 

12. Reconnect the audio jack cable. Make sure the brown clip is clipped back down, and the cable is held securely.

 

13. Place the hard drive back into the iPod.

 

14. Reconnect the battery ribbon cable. Again, make sure the brown clip is clipped back down, and the cable is held securely.

 

15. Put the iPod back together.
